Chapter 1

Alora looked around the empty room, depressed. Her eleven-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was asleep in the other room and once again she was alone. She was sitting on her bed in the dim light of her lamp. She sighed and closed her eyes, putting her head back against the backboard of her queen-sized bed.

Her cell phone; which lay on her bedside table, vibrated suddenly, startling her. She picked it up and opened it to view the text message.
Alora?

It was a message from Laurence. She smiled to herself. She and Laurence had been dating for three years though they had known each other since she was fifteen.
Who else would this be?

She was teasing him but that was how they were with each other. They were always light-hearted when they talked except when discussing her past; especially her stepfather or the man that raped her when she was sixteen, Elizabeth’s father.
LOL I was just checking if you were sleeping

Truth be told, she had been waiting for him to text her all night and he probably already knew that. He had a habit of reading her like an open book.
Nope just waiting to talk to you

I waited fro his response patiently.
So who is going to call tonight?

She replied that she would before quickly scrolling to his number and calling.

While reading her last message the phone started ringing him his hand. Laurence closed his eyes and listened to the chorus of the first song he ever sang to her. He smiled and answered the call.
“Hey baby.” He said softly.
“Hey I told you I’d call.” Her soft musical voice rang in his ears. He smiled at the sweet sound he had heard many times before.
“I’m glad you did. I missed your voice.” She giggled as she always did when he would say things like that. They talked for hours as always but behind his smile and care-free, sweet attitude there was a battle being fought between his heart and he mind.
You see there was something Laurence wasn’t telling her. He loved Alora, more then anyone would ever know, but the secret he kept could scare her away forever. You see, Laurence wasn’t human. He was long ago until he trusted a woman he thought he loved only to be killed and changed into a monster. Into a vampire. In the midst of this inner conflict he had gone silent.
“Laurence; are you there?” Alora said bringing him back down to earth.
“Yeah I’m here. I was just thinking.” He said still distracted.
“Penny for your thoughts?” She said.
“Where’s my penny?” He said with a laugh.
“We have a running tab remember.” She laughed.
“How about we turn those pennies into kisses instead?” He said
Alora laughed. He always had a way of brightening her day. Just hearing his voice; his laugh, she couldn’t help but smile when she was talking to him.
“Sure thing but you will get one less kiss if you don’t tell me what you were thinking.” She teased.
“Just about how beautiful your voice is.” He said. He wasn’t ready to tell her the truth. Just let this dream continue for a little longer because when she finds out she will run away screaming. She laughed.
“What is it with you and making me blush?” She asked still laughing.
“What? Did I do it again?” He asked. He already knew the answer that. He always knew how to making her blush. Usually he didn’t even have to try. Suddenly she stopped laughing.
“Laurence are we ever going to meet face to face?” She asked and Laurence went silent again. She had been asking to meet for over a year now and he kept putting it off. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to see her it was simply that he was afraid of what could happen. He couldn’t trust himself to be around her.
“We will soon baby.” He said simply. It was his generic answer whenever she brought it up.
“You say that every time. It seems like soon will never come.” She said. He could hear the sadness in her voice. He was trying to protect her by not meeting with her but at the same time he could tell that he was hurting her and that was the last thing he wanted.
“How about we go on a date?” He said before he could stop himself. What are you doing man?
“Really? When?” She asked, her mood brightening considerably.
“Well tomorrow is Friday… do you think you could get a babysitter by tomorrow night?” He asked remembering that Elizabeth wasn’t yet old enough to stay home alone.
“Actually there’s no need. Lizzy is staying at a friend’s house tomorrow night for an end-of-the-school-year slumber party.”
“Perfect. So what do you say to dinner? My treat?”
“I’d love to.”
“Great then I will pick you up at six?”
“Can’t wait.” Dawn said with a hugh smile on her face.
“See you then.” He said
“Ok… good night.” She said softly.
“I love you.” He said.
“I love you too.” She hung up the phone and returned it to the nightstand. She finally had a date. Not just a date but a date with the man she had been head-over-heels for since she was fifteen. Her heart was pounding. She was nervous and there was no denying that. She had been talking to Laurence for twelve years and not once as she seen the man face to face that had her swooning at just the sound of his name.
She was so scared he would meet her and turn around and walk out the door. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that had happen. Her friends had set her up on blind dates before and when the guys saw who they had been set up with they had left. Just like that. Some had even just looked in the window and left without even coming in and meeting her first.
She didn’t know what she would do if Laurence turned out the same. He had seen pictures of her and said that he thought she was beautiful but there was still the chance. The thought of calling him back and canceling crossed her mind.
I couldn’t do that. After all she was the one that had persisted on meeting him. There was no backing out now.

Laurence sat up on his bed, wide awake and mentally beating the shit out of himself. How could he let his heart get the better of him? For twelve years he had worked so hard to protect her from him and in one night he had blown it all.
All he could do now was to prepare. If he drank enough blood before tomorrow maybe, just maybe, all wouldn’t be completely lost.
He picked up his phone and pressed three on his speed dial. If he was going to pull this off he was going to need some help.
“Come on pick up… pick up.” He mumbled as the phone rang.
“Hello?” A groggy voice on the other line mumbled.
“James; its me, Laurence. I need a favor.” He said quickly. He had known James since the man had been only a teenager. He took the boy in when he ran away and was living on the streets. Since then whenever Laurence needed anything James was the first one he called. He trusted him above all others and right now he need help more then anytime before.
“It’s three in the morning. What could be so important that you wake me up at this hour?” He asked. James had never been a morning person and Laurence didn’t expect that to change now.
“Well lets see I just agreed to meet Alora face to face with could in turn expose the fact that I’m not exactly the human she thinks I am… or that I’m not a human at all.” I said calmly though in my head I wasn’t calm at all. All I could think of was all the things that could possibly go wrong in one night.
“Dude your screwed.” He said in a non-chalice sort of way.
“Thanks for the news flash.” I said getting irritated. “Anyway I need you to bring more blood over here today.”
“I brought eight bags a couple days ago.” He protested.
“I need to stock up if I am going to get through the night without exposing myself.”
“Fine, fine… don’t get your panties in a bunch. Can I at least get a little more sleep before I start my running?”

Later that day James arrived at my house with ten more bags. He looked like your typical punk kid all grown up. His hair had been blond when Laurence took him in now it was black with other colors thrown in there just for the point of putting them in. It had changed colors so many times over the years that Laurence poked fun at him telling him he would be bald before he even got his first wrinkle. Then again that was true since Laurence wasn’t ageing.
His hair fell into his eyes hiding them from the world. That had been the style when he was young and how it had survived all this time is beyond me. He hadn’t changed much since then. Sure the acne had finally cleared up but other then that he still wore the same tight girl pants and band t-shirts he had wore for the last twelve years.
“Ok here is ten more bags and the suit your ordered.” He said laying them on the kitchen table and putting the suit over the back of one of the chairs. Laurence thanked him expecting to leave right after to return to his life. He didn’t stay long when he came by. Just long enough to give Laurence the things he need and an update on the world.
“I can’t believe you are going through with this.” James said out of nowhere.
“What?”
“You always made excuses. I couldn’t bring girls back here after dates cause it was to dangerous. You wouldn’t meet Alora because it was too dangerous. You wouldn’t leave the house because it was too dangerous.” He paused. “What made you change your mind?”
That was a tough question to answer and before Laurence could give him an answer he would have to get one for himself. Why had he changed his mind? He told himself that he would never meet her to protect her but yet last night he made a date to meet her. There was only one explanation for this change of mind… no… change of heart.
“I love her.” It was a simple has that. He had used that as an excuse not to before but now it was the only reason why he would meet her. He wanted her happiness more then anything and if meeting her was the only why to get that then that was what he would have to do.

Alora sat at work wondering what she should do. She thought about calling Laurence and canceling their date but she would get up the nerve and as soon as she had the phone in her hand and was ready to call him she would lose her nerve again. She had been the one pushing to meet and now she was getting what she wanted and she was getting cold feet.
When her phone rang she looked at it hoping deep down that it would be Laurence calling to cancel, but it turned out to be her friend Steven.
“Hey.” She said answering the phone in a somewhat distracted way.
“What’s wrong?” He asked immediately. He had a way of knowing that something was wrong. Alora didn’t know if it was by the tone of her voice or if it was a six sense like he says it was. All she knew was it was annoying and terribly incontinent especially when she was trying to hide something.
“Nothings wrong.” Alora answered trying to collect her thoughts and seem more focused… at least for the moment.
“Do you really think I am going to buy that? I know you better then that.” There was no point in trying to argue with him. Steven always had been persistent and Alora knew there was no point trying to hide anything from him. He would find out eventually anyway.
“I made a date with Laurence for tonight.” Alora said as she watched a woman enter and start browsing the selection of lacy undergarments. The joys of working in a lingerie store. If it wasn’t for the fact that Steven owned the place she would never set foot in there. But he needed some one to help him run the store so here she was.
“Ok I’m confused.” He said. “Isn’t this the same guy you have been stalking since we were fifteen?”
“I have not been stalking him! But yes this is the same one.”
“Then shouldn’t you be jumping for joy right about now? I mean you have been trying to get the guy to agree to meet for three years now.”
“Yeah but what if he turns out like all the other pricks I’ve gone out with?” She said voicing my deepest fear at last.
“Do you really think that after all this time he is just going to change just like that?”
“You never know. Guys are notorious for it.”
“You know I might not act like it but I’m a guy too and I don’t think you give us enough credit.” They argued that point for a while before the costumers were ready to check out.

Nice! I like the characters, but you have a tendency to switch between 1st and 3rd person. Other than that, great story! Any chance of more soon?

ok i have written more and it is ready to go up. it still hasn't gotten to the sex scene so all of you prudes are safe for now.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Steven came by at the end of her shift. Usually he would show up and Alora would head to pick up Lizzy from school where she was waiting for her to get off work. When she walked out the store Steven followed locking up behind him.
“Where are you going?” She asked.
“With you to make sure you don’t back out.” He said putting the keys in his pocket and starting to walk to her car.
“And what about the store?” She said unlocking the car doors.
“It can be closed the rest of the day. We are open every day anyway. Besides you are going to need a guy’s point of view when picking out outfits.” He said as he got in the passenger’s side.
“Ok… that sounded really gay.” She said. The engine started and she started driving to pick up Lizzy.
“You have no idea how many times I get that in a day. But don’t worry babe… I’m straight as they come.” Alora rolled her eyes. She had known Steven since kindergarten. They had tried dating back in freshman year of high school but it didn’t work out. They were at each others throat by the end of the second week. They decided that the best thing for them to do was just to be friends. But Steven’s form of humor was commonly mistaken for flirting. In fact it was hard to tell when he was flirting and joking.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“Well I have to pick up Lizzy to take her to her friend’s house for the night.” Alora said.
“Then you would have to go to her friend’s house. I picked her up and dropped her off for you. Also she has my number and orders to call me if she needs anything.” He said looking quite proud of himself. She sighed and turned the car around to head back to the apartment.
“That was really unnecessary.” She said.
“No it wasn’t. You need time to get ready and this way there won’t be any interruptions.”
“We are just going to dinner.” She knew what was on his mind. It was the same thing that was on every guy’s mind. She just hoped that it wouldn’t be on Laurence’s mind tonight. She loved him more then anything but she wasn’t ready to do that yet.
They pulled up in front of her apartment and got out of the car. Once inside they started going through her clothes, tossing the rejected outfits into a pile in the middle of the room.
“What about this?” Steven said holding up a short red dress.
“I don’t want to look like a slut!” Alora said returning to her digging.
“This is pointless! How am I supposed to pick out something when I don’t even know where I am going?” She said falling back on her bed.
“You could call and ask him.” Steven pointed out. Before Alora could argue her cell rang.
“No need to, it’s him.” She said looking at the name on her phone. “How much you want to bet he’s calling to cancel?” She answered the phone before Steven could say anything.
“Hey honey.” She said.
“Hey baby. How was your day?” Laurence asked.
“Fine a little boring though.” She answered.
“You ready for our date?”
“To tell you the truth no…. I can’t figure out what to wear.” She said standing up and resuming her search. Laurence laughed.
“Well you could come in nothing… I would be happy and you would surely turn a few heads.” He said slyly.
“I’m just going to ignore that suggestion.” Alora said.
“What did he suggest?” Steven said curiously. I shook my head to tell him nothing.
“Who’s there with you?” Laurence tensed. He never trusted anyone but especially not men and especially not around Alora. Some might call him over protected or possessive but that was just how he was.
“Don’t worry… its just Steven. He is trying to help me find something to wear.” She said absent-mindedly while looking at a blue dress before throwing it in the maybe pile.
“Are you sure he’s not gay?” Laurence joked. Laurence knew all about Steven and his past with Alora. The two of them talked every now and then and were friends… most of the time. There were things they argued about… like her for example but they got along pretty well.
“You know I ask that same question and he assures me that he’s not so…” She looked over at Steven as he threw her an evil look. “Away you could make it a lot easier and tell me where we are going.”
“Sorry no can do.” He said.
“And just why not?” Alora said stopping her search and putting her hand on her hip.
“It’s a surprise.” He said simply.
“But if you don’t tell me, there is no way I will be able to get dressed. And yes… I do have to get dressed.” Steven choked back a laugh and she shot him a dirty look.
“Put Steven on the phone.” He said.
“Why?”
“That way I can tell him so he knows what to dress you in.”
“Couldn’t you just tell me?”
“No.” He said with a laugh. How he enjoyed teasing her. She sounded cute when she begged and whined. He could only imagine how she looked when she did it.
“Fine.” She whined. Laurence laughed softly.
“Hey dude.” Steven said when she put him on.
“Take me off speaker.” Laurence said with another laugh. He could her Alora in the back ground curse, confirming his suspicion.
“I told you that wouldn’t work” Steven said taking the phone off speaker. “So what’s up?”
“Am I off speaker now?” He asked.
“Yep so what do you want me to put her in?”
“Well I am taking her to The Seafront.”
“So something nice. Any color you like her in?” Steven asked.
“You know she looks beautiful in anything.”
“Ok, ok save the complaints for when you talk to her. Any other requests?”
“No that’s it. I’ll get to work and let you say good-bye to Alora.” There was a brief silence while Steven handed the phone back to Alora.
“I really hate you, you know that? Both of you.” She said annoyed. She said that every time he told her friend a secret and Laurence knew she didn’t mean it.
“You know you love me. And trust me its worth leaving it a surprise.”
“It better be. Anyway I have to go. Steven found something so I have to change and finish getting read.” She said with a sigh.
“Ok baby. I will see you in an hour out side the apartment.”
“Ok honey. I love you.”
“I love you too.” Laurence hung up the phone and quickly changed into his suit to get on his way.
